Investigator: Charles R. Wira PhD Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, USA.

This position is available for research into innate and adaptive immunity in the human female reproductive tract, and the impact of age on immune function.

Our laboratory focuses on regulation of innate and adaptive immunity by sex hormones, chemical contraceptives, menopause and aging at the cellular and molecular level. Utilizing freshly obtained human reproductive tract tissues we identify the mechanisms regulating epithelial, fibroblast, and immune cell (CD4+ and CD8+ T cells) protection against incoming pathogens at the different anatomical compartments of the reproductive tract. Individual projects currently underway include determining how CD4+ and CD8+ T cell phenotype and function change with increasing age and pathogen exposure; the effect of aging on immune protection by epithelial cells; and the contribution of fibroblasts to innate immunity in the FRT.

Application information: This a NIH-funded position is open immediately although the start date is flexible. Candidates must have a PhD and/or MD with a strong background in immunology/microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Preference will be given to individuals with experience working with human cells in culture, flow cytometry, and live cell imaging.  Please send curriculum vitae, three names of references and a one-page summary of research background, interests and long-term goals to Dr. Charles Wira.

The Wira Laboratory is located in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH USA. Unfortunately, due to the number of applications anticipated, we may not be able to reply individually to all inquiries. All applicants, including those from abroad, must be able to come to Lebanon, NH USA for an in person interview.
